Facebook Etiquette: 10 tips for better social networking

Are you unwittingly annoying all your friends on Facebook? Just read on to learn the dos and donts of social networking.

1. Profile Picture:

You must have a picture. This is not the Question-mark book. Avoid pictures of huge groups where it is hard to recognise you. And keep your friends list in mind, avoid anything too sexy or crazy.

2.Do not Update Your Status About Mundane Activities:

It’s seriously great to know that you just pigged out on a half pound filet mignon but unless you are giving context to your experience, your friends probably don’t care. Status updates were not made to let your friends know about the fact that you are standing on an elevator, or even on a boat! If you’re going to take the time to enter your status, at least take the time to be a bit creative with it.

3.Sharing Your Quiz Results

It’s great to know that you are destined to be a “True New Yorker”, but do all of your friends really need to hear about it? There are thousands of entertaining quizzes on Facebook but keep the entertainment to yourself rather than share the insignificant results with your friends.  Do your friends really want to know about the most private details of your life as described through quiz results? Probably not.

4.Photos

Tag Your Friends In Unattractive Photos

Not everybody can look attractive from every angle but that doesn’t mean you should take this opportunity to highlight the angle that doesn’t work. Even worse is that you continue to tag everybody else that’s in the unattractive photo so that it can be circulated among all our friends.

Party Pictures:

Had a great time this weekend..? No harm sharing it with  your friends. Just keep in mind everyone who is seeing these pictures, friends family et all. And to add to it, prospective employers too. So save the really crazy pictures for your closest pals.

5. Relationship status:

Relationship status is a mutual decision. Lots of problems can arise from a unilateral status change.Telling the ex along with the rest of the world at the same time is definitely not a great idea .Posting a ton of pics, vids and comments regarding a recent, failed relationship is a bad idea. If you need a lifeline, phone a friend don’t ask the audience.

6.Don’t over-poke:

Poking is the lowest form of facebook communication. Poking is annoying to most people on a regular basis.. Just suck it up and send a message.

7.Invites:

Do not spam other peoples profiles with invites to quizes and games. There is always a skip button on the side.. Use it!

8. Friend Requests:

You do not have to accept every friend request that is sent to you. There are no prizes being given away to the person with the largest number of friends.

Just keep in mind the pictures and the information you have on your profile and think if you are comfortable to have them access it.

Do Not friend strangers.

9. Facebook Chat:

Remember, just because your friend is logged in, it does not mean that they are waiting to start off a conversation.

Keep in mind that your friend maybe busy, and may not necessarily have to reply.

10. Recognize the difference between a wall and messages:

What you communicate with a friend does not necessarily have to be seen by everyone you know. Always send messages for private messages and personal details like contact nos etc.

And most definitely, do not put up wall posts like “i looove you honey bunny!”.. You dont want to be the laughing stock of the digital world.

Replying to messages and wall posts promptly is always a good practice.
