Windows 7 ahead of Snow Leopard, Linux in just two Weeks
In only two weeks since the official commercial launch of Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 7 has managed to surpass Apple’s Snow Leopard market share. Snow Leopard has been on the market for three months while Windows 7 has only been on the market for two weeks.
Microsoft still stands dominant in the market share, holding strong at 92.52% of all computers in October, compared to Mac OS X with 5.27%, Linux with 0.96% and 1.25% with other operating systems.
Windows 7 managed to surpass Snow Leopard’s market share (1.17%); Windows 7 managed to grab 2.15% of the market share, where Vista shows 18.83% and Windows XP with 70.48%.
In the weeks leading up to this holiday season, sales for Windows 7 are sure to climb higher; Windows 7 has already exceeded Windows Vista in the first two weeks of their launch by 234%.

Way to go Win7! Only two weeks. Ain’t that something. Hey, how long did it take XP to blast by Linux back in 2001? Oh, that’s right. Linux wasn’t enough of a concern to say “hey, we beat you”. But now it is. Linux is a competitor where it wasn’t one before. Say what you want but if Microsoft is boasting about beating Linux, then Linux is hurting the biggest software house on the planet.
Big deal that Windows 7 surpassed Snow Leopard. It’s not a fair evaluation in my opinion. The two have totally different market shares, as in Mac vs Windows. Personally anyone who bought Vista got ripped off in that they had to pay twice to get a decent working operating system.
The problem with early stats like this is that they reflect only one thing: The number of boxes Microsoft sent out to the shops. It does NOT equal SALES. The same sort of baloney was posted for Windows Vista, and it turned out that the Vista boxes languished at the shops, gathering dust.
What will be useful will be the results for the quarter as well as measurements of actual sales by shops versus sales by Microsoft.
Personally, I expect 7ista will be a lot more successful than Vista and I expect the numbers quoted here won’t be far off. But there is one factor regarding 7ista that has not yet come to the fore: People trying to update to 7ista using their old XP hardware are totally screwed due to the much higher hardware requirements. A lot of people are going to go into whining mode when they find 7ista runs slower than XP on their hardware. This phenomenon happened with Vista as well. But this time, due the much better sales of 7ista, the whining will be much more plentiful.
Whenever I’m reading posts like this I can’t help but think of how things have changed since I was young. I guess I’m getting old, but I miss the way things used to be.
